Cal, San Diego State Earn Final Four Berths. Saint Mary’s Falls to Army
April 19th, 2009 by scrumcap
Cal and San Diego State punched their tickets to the national collegiate semifinals with victories in the Rounds of 16 and 8 last weekend at Cal. The Aztecs bested LSU 44-30 to earn their place in the May 1st semis, and Cal soon followed with a 76-10 beat down of a game Cal Poly side.
Sadly, St. Mary’s came up short in their bid to make a 3-out-of-4 California event. The Gaels fell behind 0-26 at half time against Army, and despite a furious second half ultimately fell 26-33 to the Cadets. Capping a truly fine season, the boys from Moraga then beat Tennessee in the consolation game to finish 21-2-1 on the year, with their only other loss a closer-than-it-sounds 5-20 vs. Cal.
Brigham Young again returns to the semis and faces the Aztecs, on the strength of their 13-3 win over Arkansas State. Cal will play Army in the other semifinal match at Stanford on May 1st.
